Own a distinctive piece of Fender history
By the late ’50s, Leo Fender had some new tricks up his sleeve, and a number of design refinements were infused into the Jazzmaster when it was introduced as an upscale alternative to the Strat and Tele in 1958. The Jazzmaster featured a radical (but incredibly comfortable) contoured offset-waist body, a new floating vibrato tailpiece design with a lock button, and single-coil pickups pickups that produced richer, warmer sound than Strats or Teles. The controls were also elaborate for the time, and players could actually dial in “preset” lead and rhythm tones. The Jazzmaster was originally aimed at – you guessed it – jazz guitarists, but found a home in the burgeoning Surf Music scene of the early ’60s. Today, the Jazzmaster is celebrated as one of the two “alternative” Fenders (the short-scale Jaguar being the other), and is seen in the hands of artists as diverse as Elvis Costello, J. Mascis, and Thurston Moore.
Nitrocellulose laquer finish has tonal value
The Fender Custom Shop Limited Edition Relic La Cabronita “Boracha” Jazzmaster wears a relic’d nitrocellulose laquer finish. Nitro finishes – standard back in the ’60s and ’70s – are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look authentically vintage (particularly when they’re relic’d) – they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities.
The Relic treatment – more than just a worn look
Fender Custom Shop’s Relic treatment creates instruments that are spittin’ images of the originals as they might look today. Without sneaking a look at the neck heel stamps, you’d be hard-pressed to distinguish the Limited Edition Relic La Cabronita “Boracha” Jazzmaster from the real deal. Custom Shop luthiers have painstakingly re-created the wear patterns from decades of nightly professional use on this guitar’s nitrocellulose laquer finish. But they didn’t stop there. The Custom Shop luthiers juiced the Heavy Relic Jazzmaster’s playability with a 9.5 radius and taller 6105 frets – giving you a modern guitar that’s perfect for bending and shredding. It only looks likes it’s been around for a half-century!
